The University of Washington’s ‘The Whole U’, a program that focuses on holistic wellness, wrote about the importance of eating locally grown food. According to Kristine Carlson, a registered dietitian and certified nutrition support clinician, there are 8 key benefits to eating local foods:

1.  Local foods are fresher.
2.  Local foods are seasonal.
3.  Local foods are better for the environment.
4.  Local foods preserve green space and farmland.
5.  Local foods promote food safety.
6.  Local foods promote variety.
7.  Local foods support your local economy.
8.  Local foods create community.

Studies have shown that eating locally grown food is healthier for you. When produce travels far distances it becomes less fresh loosing nutrients along the way. Once fruits and vegetables are removed from their natural place of growth, vitamins such as C, E, A and B start to decrease. One way to stop this from happening is when local farmers allow the produce to ripen while on the vine as apposed to picking the produce sooner and have the ripening process happen in the packaging.
